Children with Problematic Sexual Behaviors: Identification, Safety and Response

November 2, 2018

Atlanta, Georgia

9:00 – 4:30

With as many of two thirds of our children being exposed to adverse childhood experiences along with an increase of availability and access to pornography and sexualized material, it should be no surprise that many children in our society experience Problematic Sexual Behaviors (PSBs). These children are often taken out of their homes and separated from their families. Too often they are placed in residential treatment or safety resourced homes that often cause further disruption and increased trauma.        However, there is hope that these children can successfully respond to    appropriate interventions that results in increased healthy development and improved family relationships. Many clinicians and researchers have been working together to identify how cognitive behavioral interventions impact these problematic behaviors. The recidivism rates show most children can make better choices. In this workshop we will be discussing the research, safety planning, healthy development, assessment, and interventions to address PSBs in children ages 7 to 12 years old.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to define problematic sexual behaviors and identify contributing factors.
  2. Participants will be able to differentiate between normal childhood sexual development versus problematic sexual behaviors.
  3. Participants will learn about some assessment tools that are available and helpful when treating children with problematic sexual behaviors.
  4. Participants will learn behavioral interventions for both children with problematic sexual behaviors and their caregivers.
