Integrating Narrative Approaches in Sex Therapy

August 23, 2019

Melissa Coats

3 continuing education clock hours

**For those outside of the metro Atlanta area this program will be available on live webinar**

With the multitude of messages regarding sex and sexuality presented to us on a daily basis, sex has become a topic often associated with confusion, guilt, shame, and self-esteem issues. In this workshop participants will learn to use a narrative approach to sex therapy in order to help clients identify damaging scripts regarding sex, learn how those scripts were developed, and help them rewrite a new narrative empowering them in their sexuality. This workshop will be both didactic and experiential in nature to help participants also examine their own narratives around sex and sex therapy.

· Identify the congruencies between narrative therapy and sex therapy.

· Review some of the common narratives individuals and couples develop around sex.

· Discuss narrative techniques and interventions to be used in sex therapy with individuals and couples.

· Examine one’s own scripts around sex and sexuality and how to work with clients with similar and different scripts.

Melissa Coats is a psychotherapist and a sex therapist. Most of her work involves helping my clients overcome struggles with stress, sex, and self-esteem. She is a graduate of the University of Georgia with an M.Ed. in Professional Counseling.  Melissa has been in private practice since 2013 in Norcorss, GA where she received training working with clients struggling with anxiety, stress, and trauma.  Today she works out of two locations in Alpharetta and Buckhead. Melissa has traveled the U.S. all the way from Jacksonville, FL to Las Vegas, NV. Travelling and working across these distances allowed her to gain valuable experience with different cultures and provided valuable opportunities to enhance therapeutic skills and interests.
Her interest in sex therapy grew while working in private practice in Jacksonville, FL. She began working with clients struggling with a variety of sexual issues and  realized that most of the problems had underlying themes of anxiety and self-esteem issues. Melissa began exploring the connection between stress, sex, and self-esteem and the impact on sexual, emotional, and mental health
From Jacksonville, Melissa  transitioned to Las Vegas, NV where she gained invaluable experience volunteering at The Center, serving the LGBTQ community in Nevada. She began talks and workshops on topics regarding mental health and sexuality. Since then, she have spoken to a variety of audiences on sex and sexuality, cancer and sexuality, anxiety management, boundaries, and self-care.
