Betrayal is more than sexual. Research shows the prevalence of financial, emotional, and relational betrayal. Gaslighting and the proper usage of the term will be presented. The impact of gaslighting in relationships will be presented. Statistics indicate that anywhere from 30 - 60% of couples will experience betrayal in their primary relationship. Therapists need to be equipped to addressed the different types of betrayal. This workshop will address dynamics of sexual, emotional, financial, and relational betrayal. Research from experts in the field will be presented.


Learning Objectives




1. Participants will be able to identify different types of betrayal including sexual, emotional, financial, and relational.

2. Participants will be able to recognize the impact of gaslighting on relationships.

3. Participants will be able to list things that make clients vulnerable to betrayal.

Richard holds two masters degrees; an M.Ed. from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and an M.A. From Harding University Graduate School. Richard is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) with the state of Georgia and a nationally certified counselor (NCC) with the National Board of Certified Counselors.  Richard is a certified professional counselor supervisor (CPCS), a certified problematic sexual behavior therapist supervisor (CPSBT-S), a certified sexual and relational trauma therapist supervisor (CSRTT-S), and a certified betrayal trauma specialist (CBTS). Richard recently earned the certified sexual wellness therapist credential (CSWT) and received the distinguished sex therapist (DST) designation from SASH.


Richard is one of the founders of the International Association of Certified Sexual Addiction Specialists (IACSAS) where he served as president for 13 years, and a founding board member of the Association for Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists (APSATS) where he served for over 4 years. He developed the first graduate course to be taught on sexual addiction along with a colleague and guest lectures in a variety of University level courses. Richard is a frequent guest on Atlanta area radio & television programs dealing with problematic sexual behavior, betrayal trauma, and domestic violence. He is the author of the LIFE Guide for Young Men, and a Journey Through Secrets. He is the co-author of Spouses of Sex Addicts: Hope for the Journey (book & workbook) and the LIFE Guide for Couples.
