This workshop will address theoretical perspectives on treating sexual behaviors in clients who experience significant distress.

Clients present quite often with sexual behaviors that are problematic for them, their families, or society. The concept of sexual addiction gained notoriety over the last 40 years. The recent failed attempts to get sexual addiction into the DSM brought many problems to light. Researchers have worked over the last 10 years to address the issues related to problematic sexual behaviors. The recent acceptance of compulsive sexual behavior disorder into the ICD makes this topic even more relevant.

  • Participants will be given a history of sexual addiction and diagnostic issues
  • Participants will be able to list 5 theoretical approaches to problematic sexual behavior
  • Participants will be given elements of each theoretical perspective and evaluate its merits
  • Participants will be able to identify ways each theoretical approaches impacts treatment of the partner and family.

Richard holds two masters degrees; an M.Ed. from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga and an M.A. From Harding University Graduate School. Richard is a licensed professional counselor (LPC) with the state of Georgia and a nationally certified counselor (NCC) with the National Board of Certified Counselors.  Richard is a certified professional counselor supervisor (CPCS), a certified problematic sexual behavior therapist supervisor (CPSBT-S), a certified sexual and relational trauma therapist supervisor (CSRTT-S), and a certified betrayal trauma specialist (CBTS).


Richard is one of the founders of the International Association of Certified Sexual Addiction Specialists (IACSAS) where he served as president for 13 years, and a founding board member of the Association for Partners of Sex Addicts Trauma Specialists (APSATS) where he served for over 4 years. He developed the first graduate course to be taught on sexual addiction along with a colleague and guest lectures in a variety of University level courses. Richard is a frequent guest on Atlanta area radio & television programs dealing with problematic sexual behavior, betrayal trauma, and domestic violence. He is the author of the LIFE Guide for Young Men, and a Journey Through Secrets. He is the co-author of Spouses of Sex Addicts: Hope for the Journey (book & workbook) and the LIFE Guide for Couples.
